This book is an introduction to translating for dubbing from English into Italian, with a focus on linguistic and cultural aspects. It is addressed to university students who embark on the study of audiovisual or screen translation for the first time. It provides a comprehensive overview of the most important theoretical approaches to the study of audiovisual translation, and an analysis of the linguistic and cultural issues that need to be dealt with when translating for dubbing. Examples are drawn from several films. This text will help students reflect on the meaning of translation, on its difficulties and on the different factors that may influence it. It also aims to help them improve their linguistic and cultural awareness, and their ability to compare English and Italian at different linguistic levels.

Questo libro è un’introduzione alla traduzione per il doppiaggio dall’inglese all’italiano, con particolare riguardo agli aspetti linguistici e culturali. È rivolto a studenti universitari che si avvicinano per la prima volta allo studio della traduzione audiovisiva. Il testo fornisce un ampio panorama dei più importanti approcci teorici allo studio della traduzione audiovisiva. Inoltre contiene un’analisi degli aspetti linguistici e culturali che devono essere affrontati nel tradurre per il doppiaggio, illustrati attraverso esempi tratti da vari film. Il libro intende aiutare gli studenti a riflettere sul significato della traduzione, sulle difficoltà che comporta e sui fattori che la influenzano. Vincenza Minutella is a Researcher in English Language and Translation at the University of Turin. She holds a Ph.D. in Translation Studies from the University of Warwick. She has conducted research in Shakespeare translation and audiovisual translation, focussing in particular on interlingual and intersemiotic translations of Romeo and Juliet, on the translation of multilingual films and of audiovisual texts for a young audience, on humour translation and on the English influence on dubbed Italian.

Vincenza Minutella è ricercatrice di Lingua e Traduzione Inglese presso l’Università di Torino. Ha conseguito il dottorato di ricerca in Translation Studies presso l’Università di Warwick. Ha svolto ricerca sulla traduzione di Shakespeare e sulla traduzione audiovisiva. In particolare, ha esaminato traduzioni interlinguistiche e intersemiotiche di Romeo and Juliet, il doppiaggio e il sottotitolaggio di film plurilingui e di prodotti audiovisivi per i giovani e l’influenza dell’inglese sull’italiano del doppiaggio.
